The glass used in these fireplaces is not plate glass. It is most likely fully tempered. Should it break, the stresses trapped inside the glass from the manufacturing process will cause it to fracture along curved edges, greatly reducing the possibility of injury. As for avoiding blackening, there are many wood fireplaces and stoves on the market that make use of appropriate glass surfaces (such as borosilicate-based glass like Pyrex), and none of them blacken easily from deposited carbon - when they do, they are easy to clean: Windex and an old newspaper.

Also, you could probably build a similar fireplace yourself. I have seen two other examples, similar to these (although not as modern or extravagant) that were built by the homeowner at a very reasonable cost. Attractive design is not out of reach for us "common folk" :)

Since when will cool air go "up" the chimney?

Unless they are using gas logs, these fireplaces would definitely be a nightmare to clean. The glass doors on my fireplace have stains that will never come off. I can see these being replaced with something translucent inside of a year.

Ok so the article starts talking about how inefficient fireplaces are and I am expecting it to tell me why this one is so great. Nope, nada, nothing this is obviously a toy for the oil company executive class. And yes my first reaction was the same as Lexi O.

People who can afford renovations like this use special smoke free logs made of recycled, vitamin enhanced wood. Upon entering their home they take off their shoes and wear organic recycled slippers. Those seats in the background aren't intended to be actually sat on. They are not mere furnishings they are part of a sensory stimualtion system.

One glass fireplace + one fun party for friends + one staggering drunk idiot = one major disaster involving slashed and burning guests in a broken glass riddled apartment which is ablaze.

Deaths, maimings, financial ruin, social death......
